约翰·巴肯（1875年8月26日—1940年2月11日），苏格兰小说家及政治家，曾任加拿大总督，代表作《三十九级台阶》。1927年代表苏格兰高等教育界当选英国下院议员，被任命为加拿大总督。公务之余他仍坚持写作。那一时期的作品有《尤利乌斯·凯撒》，《沃尔特·司各特爵士》，《奥利弗·克伦威尔》和《奥古斯都》。还有一些优秀的惊险小说。他深入加拿大各地体察民情，深的英国人、法国人和印第安人的爱戴，这种频繁的出访，特别是1939年加拿大皇室巡查，加重了他的病情，在蒙特利尔去世，1940年出版《临终回忆录》。

He talked, too, about a Black Stone and a man that lisped in his speech, and he described very particularly somebody that he never referred to without a shudder--an old man with a young voice who could hood his eyes like a hawk.

The little man had told me a pack of lies. All his yarns about the Balkans and the Jew-Anarchists and the Foreign Office Conference were eyewash, and so was Karolides. And yet not quite, as you shall hear.
